Technique: Ocean’s Breath

In this breathing practice you are tightening your throat to produce an ocean-like sound while breathing. Ocean’s Breath or Ujjayi is a form of deep belly breathing designed to relax your body and your mind, and to help fight irritations and frustrations. Practise Ocean’s Breath regularly to clear your mind and calm your senses.

It will take you a few minutes to complete. Practise regularly and at least twice a day to begin with.

Remember: Find a quiet space and make yourself comfortable and relaxed before you begin.

1. Close your mouth and breathe in and out through your nostrils.

2. As you breathe, tighten the muscles at the back of your throat as if you are trying to whisper.

3. Exhale slowly and make a ‘haaah’ sound that resembles the sound of the ocean.

4. Repeat the process for several minutes to receive the full benefit of Ujjayi Breath.
